The James E. Ireland Foundation at Blue Grass Community Foundation

James E. Ireland Foundation (JEIF) was established 25 years ago by Mary Lloyd Ireland in memory of her father, who died of colon cancer in 1992. JEIF supports research, education, speakers and service, and projects focusing on women’s health, injuries in athletically active women--young and old alike.

In April 2018 the Active Women's Health Initiative (AWHI) was launched through the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences. AWHI will focus on physical activity and wellness for women across the lifespan. Integrating research, education, and service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, we hope to create Healthy Women from Active Girls. To generate financial support of AWHI, the Ireland Foundation (IF) has been established as part of JEIF.

Have you ever thought about What IF? I was able to compete in sports as a girl in the 60's and 70's. I am a well-respected Orthopedic Surgeon in a male dominated specialty ....

What if I never swam, played field hockey and basketball, climbed trees and ran? What IF?

The Ireland Foundation (IF) is established to honor my mother, sister, and me. No males to carry on the Ireland name, but strong women who are active, healthy, volunteer, serve, and care about family, friends, and community.

I often think ‘What If?’ and know how blessed I am to have had my parents and family. Honoring the Ireland memory to support AWHI is the goal of this campaign. A lead gift to AWHI from JEIF of $100,000 has been pledged. -- Mary Lloyd Ireland, MD
